Relationships and personal growth



On another episode of Dr Phil on TV, Dr Phil asked a question:

“Have you quit being who you are……… to become how you think you ought to be………….. to keep the relationship together”?

It is the use of the word ought that is the problem. The word should is similarly guilt-inducing enough to have us change our ways to fit the situation/person. Shouldn’t we be who we really are? Anything other than this is a lie (to yourself and to your spouse/partner).
